Financial End Game Fantasy Scenario

I'm sick of all the bad economic news. All it does is cause us to focus on disastrous scenarios in an attempt to keep us paralyzed by fear and anxiety, looking to the gubmint and the new Messiah-elect to be our savior. Here, at long last, a financial end game scenario with a HAPPY ending!

2009-2012 Future Scenario

October 2008: After a brief relief rally, the market remains flat at around 11,400 on the DOW. No rebound in home sales, car sales plunge and unemployment surges. The message from Treasury & Fed is "wait for the bailout to work."

November 2008: Obama wins the election. The $0.7 Trillion has been entirely swallowed up by the $1,000 Trillion in unsound derivatives debt bomb. Once again, institutions stop lending to each other. Citigroup and Wachovia fall into the FDIC's hands, which asks Congress for $300 billion extra to replenish its insurance fund. Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson and Fed Chairman Bernanke both resign.

December 2008: The Christmas shopping season is a disaster. By February, 30% of the retail establishments in America that were operating during Christmas will be shuttered.

January 2009: President Obama is sworn in and announces extraordinary measures to stop the crisis. First of all, he negates all derivitave contracts, and it is illegal to enter into such contracts in the future. Secondly, he halts the payment of funds overseas. "We need to keep our funds at home during this emergency", Obama explains. Ports fall silent as the importation of goods from China stops. Basic consumer goods are scarce and expensive. News reports focus on "the restarting of American industry". The US Dollar sells off below 60 on the USD Index.

Spring 2009: The Federal Government suspends Medicare and Medicade payments to states, which greatly frees up cash flow in D.C. States implement a triage form of medicare, and almost all but the most rudimentary treatments become unvailable to those who cannot pay cash up front. Democrats rage against President Obama, and threaten to eject him from the Democratic Party.

Summer 2009: “Official” unemployment numbers are now at 13% (realistically, it is 25-30%). US soldiers are used to put down riots in inner city areas. Production of consumer goods domestically begins to catch up with demand since the halt in foreign payments to China left America's ports empty and rusting. The Federal Government announces that there will be no Social Security payments in October, 2009 to help conserve cash, and urges the elderly to save ahead for the missed month. A schedule, showing every fourth month to be a "Social Security Holiday" is circulated. President Obama's approval rating plunges even further. Half of all regional banks have failed. The Federal Government continues to fund the FDIC and insured accounts are still guaranteed.

Fall 2009: With credit still frozen, housing prices are down 50% compared to one year earlier in the Fall 2008. Standard size homes in the Midwest/Southeast are selling for $40,000 cash and $130,000 cash in waterfront areas of California/Florida. California announces it will default on its budget and halts all expenditures except for police and army national guard. Massive wildfires are not fought due to lack of money, and ten billion dollars of damage occurs in the great Inland Empire Fire. General Motors and Ford, both of which are hedge funds masquerading as automobile manufacturers for years, end production of cars and shutdown remaining factories. Boeing declares bankruptcy. General Electric's manufacturing businesses are purchased for $1.9 billion by Warren Buffet when the financial arm of GE collapses. Unemployment at 35-40% and Gold bullion surges above $4,000 per oz. as the US Dollar cascades downward to 30 on the USD Index, closely followed by a EuroDollar selloff. The Singapore/ Aussie/NZ Dollar(s), Swiss Franc, Norwegian Krone and other defensive currencies rise exponentially in value near-term, but only as a reactionary move due to the consequent selloff in the US Dollar and not due to any fundamental secure backing of those respective currencies.

Winter 2010 Leading into 2012: Steady very-high unemployment, increased civil violence and hunger, and limited credit availablity. President Obama loses the election to Reed/Dobson running on the newly-formed Independant Christian Party. President Ralph Reed restores monthly Social Security Payments at 35% of previous levels, but fails to restore Medicare payments to the states. Mortality rates among the elderly reach third world levels. Gold bullion goes parabolic north of $10,000 per oz. with few sellers. An ad-hoc barter / underground economy takes root and is virtually the only method to conduct economic activity.

2011-2012: Presidential Decree Broadcast Worldwide (CNN,CSPAN,BBC,SKY)

Immediately, gold bullion surges above USD $200,000 per oz. on world trading markets (traders determine that $51 Trillion in foreign held debt obligations divided by 260 million ounces gold supposedly held in US bullion vaults) as massive, national trade deficit / debt obligation reconciliation via Bank for International Settlements (BIS) demands, attempt to force entire physical gold bullion transfer / Special Drawing Rights (SDR) from the United States to China, Russia, Japan, and other countries holding United States debt instruments. The guillotines operate 24/7 as the world watches in utter disbelief-- a replay of the 1789 French Revolution on steroids. This is a bombshell, buried in the back pages of Bloomberg. Asian govts, big holders of US debt, are trying to reach an agreement to prevent panic selling of US debt. If this were to happen, the dollar would self-destruct overnight. Think oil's expensive now, just wait 'till it's $500/barrel, the result of a dollar that loses 70% of its value overnight as a result of panic selling by Asian governments. It's not a question of IF this will happen, it's WHEN. My best guess is that the dollar will collapse this coming winter.

Asia Needs Deal to Prevent Panic Selling of U.S. Debt, Yu Says

Sept. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Japan, China and other holders of U.S. government debt must quickly reach an agreement to prevent panic sales leading to a global financial collapse, said Yu Yongding, a former adviser to the Chinese central bank.

``We are in the same boat, we must cooperate,'' Yu said in an interview in Beijing on Sept. 23. ``If there's no selling in a panicked way, then China willingly can continue to provide our financial support by continuing to hold U.S. assets.''

An agreement is needed so that no nation rushes to sell, ``causing a collapse,'' Yu said. Japan is the biggest owner of U.S. Treasury bills, holding $593 billion, and China is second with $519 billion. Asian countries together hold half of the $2.67 trillion total held by foreign nations.

China, Japan, South Korea and others should meet soon to seal a deal, said Yu, a former academic member of the central bank's monetary policy committee. The talks should involve finance ministers, central bank governors and even national leaders, he said.

``Whether some kind of agreement between them to continue to hold Treasury bills is viable, I'm not sure,'' said James McCormack, head of sovereign ratings at Fitch Ratings Ltd in Hong Kong. ``It would be unusual. If it became apparent that sovereigns in Asia were selling Treasuries the market would take that quite badly, it's something to be avoided.''

The global credit crisis, triggered by a housing slump in the U.S., has saddled financial companies with more than $520 billion in writedowns and losses, collapsing Bear Stearns Cos. and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in the process. Insurer American International Group Inc. and mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac also were rescued by the government.

`Grave Threats'

U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is urging Congress to pass a $700 billion plan to remove devalued assets from the banking system. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said Sept. 24 that the U.S. is facing ``grave threats'' to its financial stability.

China's huge holdings of U.S. debt means it must bear a large proportion of the ``burden of sorting things out'' in the U.S., Yu said. China is not in a hurry to dump its U.S. holdings and communication between the two nations every ``couple of days'' is keeping Chinese leaders informed and helping to avoid a potential panic, he added.

``China is very worried about the safety of its assets,'' he said. ``If you want China to keep calm, you must ensure China that its assets are safe.''

Currency Manipulator

Yu said China is helping the U.S. ``in a very big way'' and added that it should get something in return. The U.S. should avoid labeling it an unfair trader and a currency manipulator and not politicize other issues, he said.

``It is not fair that we are doing this in good faith and are prepared to bear serious consequences and you are still labeling China this and that, accusing China of this and that,'' he said. ``China knows what to do. We don't need your intervention.''

The U.S. financial crisis had taught China a lesson and that was: ``Why are we piling up these IOUs if they may default?'' China's economic expansion strategy, which emphasizes export growth that has led to trade surpluses and the accumulation of $1.81 trillion in foreign-exchange reserves, is the main problem, said Yu.

``Our export-growth strategy has run its natural course,'' he said. ``We should change course.''

China should stop intervening in the foreign currency markets and thus allow rapid appreciation of the yuan, he said. While this would cause pain for exporters, China could ease the transition by using its strong fiscal position to aid those who lose their jobs. It also should stimulate domestic demand to offset lower income from overseas sales.

Without yuan appreciation, China will continue to accumulate foreign reserves, which means further accumulating ``IOUs from the U.S.,'' said Yu. ``This is paper and it may default and it will not increase China's national welfare.''

If China doesn't allow the yuan to appreciate and continues to promote export-led growth it will lead to confrontation with the U.S. and Europe, Yu said.

Paulson `Deficit' May Push Dollar Down to Record: Chart of Day

Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson's $700 billion proposal to bail out the U.S. financial system may send the dollar to record lows by swelling the budget deficit.

Paulson's proposal to buy devalued securities from banks would drive government debt above 70 percent of gross domestic product, the most since 1954. The annual deficit may balloon to as much as $1 trillion, a level that TD Securities Ltd. says could drive the greenback to $1.95 per euro. The currency reached an all-time low against the euro of $1.6038 on July 15.

The CHART OF THE DAY compares the federal budget surplus or deficit with the dollar's value against the U.S.'s main trading partners. The currency's trade-weighted index dropped 28 percent since the end of 2000, as the budget turned from a $237 billion surplus to deficits that reached a record $413 billion in 2004.

The dollar is vulnerable to deficits because the U.S. lacks savings to fund investment, leading the government to rely on sales of bonds to investors abroad, TD Securities said in a report from London.

``This is potentially a massive shock to the U.S. currency, because of the immense increase in the supply of Treasuries that will take place,'' Joshua Williamson, an economist at TD Securities in Sydney, said in a phone interview.

Treasury Seeks Authority to Buy Mortgages Unchecked by Courts

Sept. 21 (Bloomberg) -- The Bush administration sought unchecked power from Congress to buy $700 billion in bad mortgage investments from financial companies in what would be an unprecedented government intrusion into the markets.

Through his plan, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson aims to avert a credit freeze that would bring the financial system and the world's largest economy to a standstill. The bill would prevent courts from reviewing actions taken under its authority.

``He's asking for a huge amount of power,'' said Nouriel Roubini, an economist at New York University. ``He's saying, `Trust me, I'm going to do it right if you give me absolute control.' This is not a monarchy.''

As congressional aides and officials scrutinized the proposal, the Treasury late yesterday clarified the types of assets it would purchase. Paulson would have authority to buy home loans, mortgage-backed securities, commercial mortgage- related assets and, after consultation with the Federal Reserve chairman, ``other assets, as deemed necessary to effectively stabilize financial markets,'' the Treasury said in a statement.

The Treasury would also have discretion, after discussions with the Fed, to make non-U.S. financial institutions eligible under the program.

The plan would raise the ceiling on the national debt and spend as much as the combined annual budgets of the Departments of Defense, Education and Health and Human Services. Paulson is asking for the power to hire asset managers and award contracts to private companies. Most provisions of the proposal expire after two years from the date of enactment.

Schumer Warning

A failure by the government to support the U.S. financial system could lead to ``a depression,'' Senator Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat told reporters yesterday. ``To do nothing is to risk the kind of economic downturn this country hasn't seen in 60 years.''

The Treasury is seeking authority to step in as buyer of last resort for mortgage-linked assets that few other financial institutions in the world want to buy, following government takeovers of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and insurer American International Group Inc.

``Democrats will work with the administration to ensure that our response to events in the financial markets is swift,'' House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement.

The majority party will seek to reduce mortgage foreclosures and create ``fast-track authority'' for an overhaul of financial regulation, Pelosi said. Democrats will ensure ``the government is accountable to the taxpayers in any future actions under this broad grant of authority, implementing strong oversight mechanisms.''

Executive Pay

The proposal will include curbs on executive pay for the companies whose assets the government will be buying, Steve Adamske, a spokesman for Representative Barney Frank, said yesterday in an interview.

Democrats also will include a plan to stem foreclosures, which may involve tapping the loan-modification abilities of the Federal Housing Administration, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., and Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, Adamske said. Frank, a Democrat from Massachusetts, is chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.

``The consequences of inaction could be catastrophic,'' Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said in a statement.

``While the Bush proposal raises some serious issues, we need to resolve them quickly,'' he said. ``I am confident that, working together, we will.''

House minority leader John Boehner, an Ohio Republican, said yesterday he is reviewing the proposal but didn't say whether he was inclined to support it.

`Furious' Boehner

``The American people are furious that we're in this situation, and so am I,'' Boehner said in a statement. ``We need to do everything possible to protect the taxpayers from the consequences of a broken Washington.''

Congress, which may pass legislation as soon as Sept. 26, needs to ``make sure there are protections built in for taxpayers,'' said Schumer, a New York Democrat on the banking committee. Lawmakers should ensure ``taxpayers who gave the money will be put ahead of the stockholders, bondholders and others.''

Paulson is seeking an expansion of federal influence over markets that hasn't been seen since the Great Depression, said Charles Geisst, author of ``100 Years of Wall Street'' and a finance professor at Manhattan College in New York.

Hoover Era

Geisst likened the plan to the Reconstruction Finance Corp., which was chartered by Herbert Hoover in 1932 with the goal of boosting economic activity by lending money after credit markets seized up.

President George W. Bush said he called leaders in both houses of Congress and ``found a common understanding of how severe the problem is and how necessary it is to get something done quickly.''

``This is going to be a big package because it's a big problem,'' Bush said following a meeting with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe at the White House. ``We need to get this done quickly, and the cleaner the better.''

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama said in a radio address that he ``fully supports'' Paulson and Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke's efforts to stabilize the financial system. The plan, however, should benefit both main street and Wall Street, he said.

Republican Presidential nominee John McCain ``looks forward'' to reviewing the proposal while focusing at least in part on ``minimizing the burden on the taxpayer,'' said Jill Hazelbaker, communications director for the McCain campaign.

Ban Legal Challenges

The ban on legal challenges of actions by Treasury is ``distasteful, it's unfortunate and it's bad precedent, but this is an emergency and you have to act,'' said Jerry Markham, a law professor at Florida State University and author of ``A Financial History of the United States.''

``What you don't want happen is to have lawsuits that will slow things down and cause problems,'' he said.

The proposal would raise the nation's debt ceiling to $11.315 trillion from $10.615 trillion and require the Treasury secretary to report back to Congress three months after Treasury first uses its new powers, and then semiannually after that.

Paulson would gain discretion to act as he ``deems necessary'' to hire people, enter into contracts and issue regulations related to a revival of U.S. mortgage finance, according to a three-page proposal. The Treasury would ``take into consideration'' protecting taxpayers and promoting market stability.

Hiring Authority

The Treasury may hire managers to purchase the assets through so-called reverse auctions, seeking the lowest prices, Treasury said yesterday. The document specifies that Treasury may buy only assets issued or originated on or before Sept. 17.

The House will pass legislation to implement the plan by the end of this week, and the Senate will act soon after, Frank said on Sept. 19 in an interview on Bloomberg Television's ``Political Capital with Al Hunt.''

Bush said yesterday he's unconcerned that the price tag on the package may seem high.

``I'm sure there are some of my friends out there that are saying, `I thought this guy was a market guy, what happened to him?''' the president said. ``My first instinct was to let the market work, until I realized, while being briefed by the experts, how significant this problem became.''

The Bush administration seeks ``dictatorial power unreviewable by the third branch of government, the courts, to try to resolve the crisis,'' said Frank Razzano, a former assistant chief trial attorney at the Securities and Exchange Commission now at Pepper Hamilton LLP in Washington. ``We are taking a huge leap of faith.''

Russian Emergency Funding Fails to Halt Stock Rout

Sept. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Russia poured $44 billion into its three biggest banks and halted stock trading for a second day in a bid to stem the biggest financial crisis since its devaluation and debt default a decade ago.

The Finance Ministry extended the repayment period for OAO Sberbank, VTB Group and OAO Gazprombank to three months from one week. The benchmark Micex stock index plunged as much as 10 percent, taking its three-day decline to 25 percent.

Russia's financial markets are facing the biggest test since the 1998 crisis that pushed the government to default on $40 billion of debt and devalue the ruble. Global turmoil sparked by the collapse of the U.S. subprime mortgage market has led to a drying up of lending between banks and this week forced Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. into bankruptcy.

``I will tell my clients today to continue to abstain from buying Russian assets'' until economic problems are solved, said Zina Psiola, who manages a $1 billion Russian equities fund at Clariden Leu AG in Zurich.

The cost of lending has soared to a record, with the MosPrime overnight rate reaching 11.1 percent today, deterring speculative bets in equities. Russian stocks have lost more than $425 billion in value since reaching an all-time high May 17.

`Effectively Closed'

``The bond market remains effectively closed and banks are reluctant to lend to one another,'' said Julian Rimmer, head of sales trading at UralSib Financial Corp. in London.

The ruble has lost 4.8 percent against the dollar since Aug. 8, went Russia sent troops and warplanes into Georgia for a five- day military campaign that led to the worst relations with NATO since the Cold War. Investors have pulled at least $35 billion out of the country in the month since the war, according to BNP Paribas SA estimates.

Oil production, the government's biggest source of revenue, and accelerating inflation are adding to concerns for investors. Crude output is falling for the first time since 1998 and the inflation rate advanced more than expected in August, to near a five year high of 15 percent.

Still, unlike 1998, Russia is ``pretty well prepared'' to weather the turmoil, the World Bank's chief representative in Russia, Klaus Rohland, said today. The economy has grown every year for a decade and its international reserves have surged in the period by almost 50 times to $574 billion, more than any other country except China and Japan.

More Measures

The Finance Ministry yesterday's added $20 billion to the interbank lending market.

Sberbank, VTB and Gazprombank ``are market-making banks capable of insuring the liquidity of the banking system,'' the ministry said in a statement today. The government and central bank will take more measures to improve liquidity this week, the ministry said.

Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin said the measures should ``smooth over the shock changes'' in the markets. ``With foreign borrowing stopping, we must soften the impact with additional funds, then the situation will stabilize,'' he said on state television.

The ruble-denominated Micex Stock Exchange suspended trading indefinitely at 12:10 p.m. after its index erased a 7.6 percent gain and plunged as much as 10 percent within an hour. The benchmark fell 17 percent yesterday, the biggest decline of the 88 indexes tracked by Bloomberg. The dollar-denominated RTS halted trading after similar declines.

Sberbank has fallen 32 percent and VTB Group 47 percent this week.

``The primary objective of these measures is to inject liquidity to calm nervousness,'' Alexander Morozov, chief economist at HSBC Bank in Moscow, said by telephone. ``Hopefully other banks will be able to get this money via the interbank market and this should prevent the rise of rates,'' he said.

But many people are confused. Herein lies the paradox: on one hand we've heard that spending time in the sun will increase our risk of skin cancer, while, on the other hand, we are hearing more and more reports that vitamin D, which is produced by the body following exposure to sunlight, will reduce our risk of cancer and heart disease.

Summer sunshine delight
In our view, many health authorities have got people far too frightened about the sun. There are generations of kids growing up in parts of the US, Australia and other climes where the sun shines more than it doesn't who are sun averse. They either cover themselves with total block 30-50 SPF sunscreen, which itself may pose a risk to health, or even skin cancer, or they hide away indoors playing computer games or watching television to escape the sun's supposedly dangerous rays.

The main risk from solar radiation is allowing the skin to burn. Sunburn is not good for anyone and repeated episodes of sunburn, particularly in those with more sensitive and lighter skins colours, the greater the risk. So guess what? Get as much sun as you can, over as much of your body as you can—but don't get burned! Reduce your exposure accordingly. Moisturise your skin with healthy natural oils and aloe vera. Try and avoid nasty chemical mixtures, simply because their effects are either largely unknown or there is some emerging evidence of risk (but not enough to see them banned as yet!) If you need to use some type of sun protection cream, there are a few companies out there offering natural alternatives. At ANH, we don't do a lot of advertising, but put the following words 'organic natural sun protection cream' into Google and you should find a supplier of a good product in your country or region.

Dr Reinhold Veith from Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Canada, one of the foremost experts on vitamin D, has shown that a fair-skinned person can produce 10,000-20,000 IU of vitamin D in around 15 minutes when exposing around 80% of the body on a sunny, summer's day. Do this three times a week during the summer and you'll be producing optimum amounts of the remarkable, life-saving vitamin.

What to do during winter...
This is where supplements are necessary.

The leading lights in vitamin D research, as well as leading medical doctors in this field, such as our own Medical Director, Dr Damien Downing, all say we should be taking at least 1,000 IU (25 mcg) of vitamin D3 daily, although the optimum amount is closer to 4000 IU (100 mcg).

There are high dose, vitamin D3 liquid emulsion products available on the market that make this particularly easy. One drop in the mouth contains between 1000 and 2000 IU, so one or two drops a day is all you need. There are also some high dose capsules available for those who prefer.

It beggars belief that, on the basis of flawed risk assessment, based on the synthetically manufactured, more toxic form of vitamin D, vitamin D2, regulators in Europe, and internationally through Codex, are attempting to restrict our intakes to just 200 IU (5 mcg).

The only way to change this ridiculous situation is to change the way in which risk assessment is performed. It's a classic example of bad science being used to meet a political end that seems to benefit the business with disease, not the business with health or wellness.
