Hike-ooz: Boot Spur and Glenn Boulder
Spent the night in the McD's parking lot at Gorham. Right by the
river. Great spot. The Mosquitos like it, too. They especially liked
me being there. Was frequently awakened by high pitched whining in my
ear.
Breakfast at McD's. Two egg mcmuffins, large OJ, and large coffee. The
usual. Perfect hiking breakfast. Good dump afterwards, too. That
always starts the day off right. Checked weather and news on my
iPhone and texted with Hon.
Awesome sky with big clouds giving way to clear blue. Should be a
beautiful day on the summits. Film at Eleven.
Grabbed another cup of bean juice at the Cumberland. They had the
extra caffienated juice. Yeah! Took another dump at the AMC Pinkham
Notch composting toilets. Very nice! No smell whatsoever because of
how the toilets are vented. No flies, either!
Partway up Boott Spur Trail. Tucks still has glacial patches.
Progressively clearing sky. Breezy. Full on sunshine at the moment.
Idyllic.
Of all weird things: a reporter from Smartmoney.com texted me via the
AIM IM wanting to talk to me about an appliance repair article he-she
is writing. Told him-her that I wouldn't be off the mountain until
after sundown but that I'd call in the morning and could chat then.
Just a few years ago, that exchange could not have happened. It's a
weird, wired (and wireless) world.
Wow! Raging wind up here on Boott Spur and Davis Path. Literally
knocking me down at times. Turned into a Bluebird Day with bright,
sparkling blue skies. Change of plans: imstead of hiking down via
Glenn Boulder Trail and the Diretissima, I'm hiking north around
Tuckermans Ravine to Lion Head and back down that way. Yeah, decided
not to go Glenn Boulder because it made me feel depressed, which is an
odd thing for me to feel toward anything to do with hiking. Maybe
someone was trying to tell me something. Anyway, felt better about
going this route. We'll see.
Hanging out here at the junction of Tucks Ravine Trail and Lion Head
Trail. Awesome views! Trying to send pics as cell signal permits.
What is the essence of a "good hike?" What distinguishes some hikes
from others? I think a good hike is one in which you were fully
there, living life one step at a time, no worries about money or food
or anything. Just the comfortingly simple rhythm of life on the trail:
walking, looking, eating, drinking, peeing, and just being. No
worries. Oh, sure, there's the occasional demon to wrestle with but
that never stops. No rest for the weary.
Stopped by the Hermit Lake cabin. Purdy.
Made it out with plenty of daylight. Bought a six-pack of Mich Ultra
Lime Cactus and a bag of cashews. Hanging out here at a scenic
overlook on Rte 115 finishing this report and sipping some cold ones.
Life is good.
